Category: Chess: Reproduction Historical Chess Sets: Isle of Lewis Chess Set

Banbury Studios have taken the best pieces from the Lewis hoard and reproduced them here in cold-cast marble of ivory and mahogany finish. These Viking pieces which are nearly 1,000 years old were discovered on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, in the 19th century, and made of Walrus tusk. With a King height of 4 inches, this is an impressive historic set.
As with the original hoard of seventy eight men and pieces, the men are slightly different on each side, the pawns represent two of the types found.

King - Crowned, throned figure, holding sword
Queen - Throned female, crowned, looking glum
Bishop - Mitred figure with pastoral staff
Knight - Mounted, helmetted, horseman
Castle (Rook) - Armoured footsoldier
Pawn - A lozenge with Viking knotwork entwined thereon or plain scalloped
