This is a copy of a traditional design bone German chess set of the fourteenth century, now on display in the Leipzig Museum. Large numbers of this design of chessmen were imported to England during late Medieval times, Large numbers of the pieces, particularly the rook, have been found during excavations in York, London and Oxford and a probate inventory of our High Street medieval predecessor here in Oxford lists such chess men.
