Chess Tables
Hoyle’s now stock the Giglio of Italy range of chess tables. Sadly the range we used to stock by Connoisseur Games of Ware in Hertfordshire and sourced through Studio Ann Carlton of Hull in Yorkshire, are no longer available. This very nice, high quality range from Giglio does come from a traditional furniture and cabinet maker who specialise in veneered items and whose trademark is high quality walnut veneered items. The tables come with different sizes of chess board inlaid into the table top which suit a range of king sizes from two and a half inches in height, (62cm), to four inches in height (100cm). The dark squares are cut from natural walnut and the white squares from bleached sycamore. The table top surround to the board area is cut from burr walnut and the legs or pedestals are turned from beech and stained to match the rest of the chess table.
There is a good floor to knee height and two of the range have either a single drawer for chess men or an opposing pair of drawers for each colour of chess men.
These tables come in a flat pack which requires minimal construction taking only a couple of minutes, and which can easily be disassembled again without damaging the table. A good quality neutral (colourless) natural beeswax polish every year, interspersed with a light dusting with a lint-free cloth every month will keep your chess table in top condition for a lifetime’s play. As with all veneered furniture these tables should not be placed in proximity to radiators or central heating grilles which would cause the veneer to lift, nor should hot cups and mugs be placed on the surface which would cause permanent white disfiguring marks to occur. The simple expedient of having a same size glass top cut to go on the top when not in use for chess play would enable a dual role for this table. |
